Status and Trends of Caribbean Coral Reefs 1970–2024 Report
We’re excited to share that the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) has just released the Status and Trends of Caribbean Coral Reefs: 1970–2024 — the most comprehensive assessment of coral reef health in the Caribbean over the last five decades.
This year’s report includes a dedicated chapter on Panama, featuring data collected here in Bocas del Toro through long-term monitoring efforts. We’re incredibly proud that Ankay Conservation’s fieldwork, volunteers, and community scientists contributed valuable data to this regional analysis.
Why This Matters
Caribbean reefs have undergone significant changes in the past 50 years. Reports like this help identify long-term trends, understand local and regional stressors, and guide future conservation actions.
Panama’s inclusion highlights the importance of consistent, community-supported reef monitoring — and shows how even small, grassroots efforts can feed into global understanding.
